The 2016 Bogue Banks Kiteboarding Festival is a BFD – Big Air, Freestyle and Downwind.
Big Air.
What it is: This event will happen on the day with the strongest forecasted wind. This event will be arranged in two heats based on skill level (intermediate & advanced). Each heat will last 20 minutes and will have three winners.
How to win: To win this contest you simply need to jump the highest – as easy as that sounds. Contestants will not earn extra points for extremity of a trick; this is solely based on height. If your specialty is taking the elevator ride all the way to the top floor, then you could walk away with the “Captain of the Sky” award.
Freestyle.
What it is: This event will be arranged in three heats based on skill level (intermediate & advanced only). The intermediate heat will be awarded points based on “hooked in” tricks only. There will be two advanced heats:
- Advanced Heat #1 is for advanced riders using only “hooked in” tricks.
- Advanced Heat #2 is for advanced riders using a variation of “hooked” and “unhooked” tricks.
How to win: The winner is not picked on the complexity of a trick, but by the style that is executed throughout the trick. This opens the doors for anyone to win the “Kite Stylist” award.
Downwind.
What it is: This race will be arranged in heats based on skill level with a beginner, intermediate, and advanced heat. The starting and finish lines will be announced the day before the race (dependent on weather and wind).
How to win: Be the first person to cross the finish line. This race is limited to twintips and surfboards (no foils this year). If you think you are the fastest on the water, you have a good shot at winning the contested “Kitey Gonzales” award.
